Chapter Seven
Petrograd, Russia
June 1918
Bending over, Vera pressed her hand to her right side. “Luka, we have to stop and rest.”
Luka paused, motioning to her and the others to take a break. “We should be all right at the moment. They’ll have headed toward the palace and the sections of Petrograd where the stores are. They’re looking for food and things to steal so they can sell them.”
“Who is fighting exactly?” Svetlana asked, keeping her voice low.
“The main groups are the liberals and monarchists—people who are against the Bolsheviks—and the Soviets. They are fighting for rule of the country because what the Soviets promised hasn’t happened yet.” He paused for a second then continued, “Well, they did promise to leave the war, which they did, but all those soldiers need jobs and food to eat. There are no jobs to be had now that the war effort is over for Russia.”
Vera nodded. She’d read the news articles about the poor soldiers and their families starving in the streets of Moscow and Petrograd. There had been such hope when the tsar had abdicated, yet she privately thought the problems hadn’t been fixed simply because Nicholas was no longer ruling Russia.
“It makes sense, but why kill each other? Why can’t they sit and talk about what they want to do?”
Luka snorted and laughed. “Because compromising would be seen as a weakness. Lenin believes his views are the only way Russia will survive. He’s unwilling to listen to anyone else, whether their ideas are sound or not. He was the one who brought about the October Revolution and he is one of the reasons why Russia is going to be plunged into a civil war.”
She straightened then checked with her aunt and their maids. When the three ladies nodded, she met Luka’s questioning gaze. “We’re ready to go.”
“Good. We’ve only a few more blocks to go. I’ll grab my bags then we’ll head to the harbor. Thank goodness, it isn’t far from here.”
He took off again and she did her best to stay with him. Vera didn’t know how he managed not to tire like the rest of them. It was as though he didn’t get fatigued. He moved so confidently even while skulking from doorway to doorway. The strange thing for her was that she never doubted the fact that he would get them safely out of Petrograd. Vera couldn’t say how she knew that and it didn’t matter. She would follow him anywhere he led.
“Here we are. Come with me.” Luka entered a rundown building and the ladies went with him.
There wasn’t anyone at the front desk, so no one stopped them as they climbed the stairs to the third floor. Luka opened a door then motioned for her to go in. When she stepped into the one room apartment, she hesitated. The space was empty of anything except three large bags. Luka grabbed a shirt and pants from one of them.
“Turn around, everyone. I’m going to change then we’ll leave,” he told them.
